In 2016 Jadah Joehnk was on a quest for comfortable and flattering clothing. After days of shopping she was left with disappointment and disgust in herself. Nothing made her feel confident in her body or her style. If she found something remotely close, it lacked pockets!
The night before jetting off on a family vacation, she had enough. She dusted off her sewing machine and began working on geeky skirts with pockets. Jadah soon found that everywhere she wore one she was complemented and asked where she bought her skirt. Eventually, she understood she was not the only one looking for cute and practical. |
In 2017 she set out on a new mission: to create practical items that last and make everyone feel included and confident.
Her one woman operation consists of her sitting in a room with a podcast or Netflix playing and her surrounded by fabric. Jadah created her own sewing pattern, so the skirts have a wonderful spin and the right amount of poof. The pockets are hidden to help prevent pickpockets and to not distract from the pattern of the fabric. She believes in her skirt's durability, but still offer's a lifetime warranty on all the seams to insure that they will last. If any of the seams pop or rip she will fix it!
She works 16 hours a day to bring her creations to life. When shes not working on new products, graphic art, or sometimes playing video games, she's creating a new cosplay! |
In 2018 she won the Senshi Con Cosplay contest in Anchorage, Alaska for her rendition of a Steampunk Oogie Boogie (A character in Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.)
Details include a handmade Pagoda Peak umbrella decorated with Oogie's roulette wheel, Oogies gambling dice carved with accurate skulls and antiquing, and leggings covered in the bugs that make up Oogie Boogie. 90% of the costume is handmade or altered save for her combat boots and Santa Claws companion. Although Jadah has won awards for her creativity in the past, she is most proud of her new mantel center piece and looks to it for more inspiration. She dedicates her Oogie Boogie, her award, and all her inspirations to her brother. He was her number one cheerleader and always will be. |
Family is a large priority to Jadah, she grew up listening to tales about her close ancestors and learning of her roots. In her spare time she reads Norse mythology and history to try to connect with the beginnings of her family tree. In honor of her lineage she titled her sewing pattern after the Ouroboros (A large sea serpent, biting its own tail). In Norse mythology the Ouroboros is called Jörmungandr and is Loki's child. Jörmungandr circles around Midgard (Earth), if he ever lets go of his tail Ragnarok (the Fate of the Gods) happens. If you're a fan of Marvel Cinematic Universe, you know Ragnarok means it's the end of all worlds.
The short of it is, when your favorite skirt rips, it feels like the end of the world, but luckily she offers a free lifetime warranty on all of her skirts. While creating the logo of R.O.A.D. Jadah wanted to incorporate this thought process and bring it all together. The Ouroboros represents the skirts and her family's history.
Each skirt size represents other mythologies Jadah enjoys; Pixies, Sirens, Valkyries, Muses, and Goddesses.
Pixies originate from Cornwall, they are usually mischievous, small creatures that like to dance. In some lore their presence brings blessings to those who are fond of them.
Sirens have changed over time, originally, in Greek mythology they were bird-women that sang songs to lure sailors into crashing their ships on rocky shores. By the fourth century they became a little more human in appearance, but no less dangerous.
Valkyries were winged warriors in Norse mythology, they chose who may live and may die in battle. Some of the deceased are brought to Valhalla by the Valkyries, while others go to Freyja's army.
Muses are in the majority of mythology, they are the inspiration for art, science, and literature.
Goddesses are in most mythology and are normally depicted as curvy and strong women.
